Mpox
We all know that Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral zoonotic disease that can spread from animals to humans. While the outbreak in 2022 caused significant global concern, the situation has stabilized. However, maintaining awareness and taking preventive measures remains crucial.
Mpox is characterized by symptoms similar to smallpox but milder. These include fever, rash, chills, body aches, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. The rash often begins as flat lesions that progress to raised bumps, filled with pus, before eventually scabbing over.
Mpox primarily spreads through close contact with an infected person, including direct contact with rash, bodily fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated items like clothing or bedding. It can also spread from infected animals to humans.
We can prevent Mpox by:
Vaccination: While not widely available in Bangladesh yet, vaccination is a crucial preventive measure. Stay updated on vaccination programs and eligibility criteria.
Practice Good Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water is essential. Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Safe Sexual Practices: Reduce the number of sexual partners and use condoms consistently.
Avoid Close Contact: Maintain a safe distance from individuals with symptoms of mpox.
Proper Handling of Animals: Avoid contact with wild animals and practice good hygiene when handling animals or their products.
Bangladesh needs a comprehensive approach, to safeguard public health like:
Surveillance: Strengthening surveillance systems to detect and track mpox cases is vital.
Public Awareness: Creating awareness campaigns about mpox symptoms, prevention, and seeking medical care is essential.
Healthcare Preparedness: Ensuring healthcare facilities are equipped to manage mpox cases, including isolation and treatment protocols.
Research: Supporting research on mpox to develop effective vaccines, treatments, and diagnostic tools.
International Cooperation: Collaborating with global health organizations to share information and resources.
Individually everyone has a role in preventing mpox:
Stay informed about the latest updates on mpox.
Practice good hygiene and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Seek medical attention promptly if you experience symptoms.
Avoid stigmatizing individuals with mpox.
By working together, we can effectively prevent and control mpox in Bangladesh and ensure the safety of our communities.
